A monomer too far

“Wait, what did you say?”

I was lost yet again. It was the early days of writing the Polymer Fundamentals course, and I had no idea what we were talking about.

“Polyethylene Terephthalate,” my expert, Kevin, patiently replied.

One day, I thought to myself, I was going to be able to say that name and, if lucky, be able to spell it. On that distant day, far out on the edge of near impossibility, I would be a genius who would have mastered the concept of polymers and their chemistry. But the world of polymers was foreign and utterly daunting. I slowly typed out the words, missing letters and looking to Kevin, who spelled the name out for me, again.polymers.png

I came to the polymers course not having taken a chemistry class in years. My chosen path was English, not the periodic table. Attempting to crack what is literally graduate-level knowledge for someone who had spent her life in the arts portion of the Arts and Sciences was like hiking the Appalachian Trail wearing flip-flops. I felt unprepared for the challenge.

But then it happened. Word-by-word, day-by-day, it clicked. As the chapters took shape and the graphics came to life, the path to polymers became clear. The once foreign jargon of the field was finally understandable. I gradually started to see the different chain architectures, chain chemistries, and chain sequences in my mind. What I had thought was impossible became very possible and tangible before me. I understood the fundamentals of polymers.

Writing the Polymer Fundamentals course, I came to understand what polymers are and how they behave. Once you strip away the theory and get to the heart of the subject, their complexity becomes accessible. All people of various backgrounds across multiple industries can grasp polymer concepts even if they haven’t taken a science class in years. Polymers are really not as formidable as you might think . . . except for their names. Those babies are nuts.
